Decision near on Australia's most liberal abortion legislation
October 07, 2008
Legislators in Victoria are under heavy pressure as a vote nears on the state's proposed new abortion law. One particularly controversial aspect of the law is the requirement that doctors who do not perform abortions must refer women to others who will. Archbishop Denis Hart of Melbourne has warned that Catholic hospitals might be forced to shut down maternity wards if the bill passes-- a move that would still leave individual physicians without legal protection.
